The effectiveness of therapy and counselling significantly hinges on the fit between you and your clinician. This relationship is not a
one-size-fits-all solution but rather a personalized journey aimed at improving your quality of life and your wellbeing.
A strong therapeutic relationship fosters an environment where you can comfortably share your thoughts and emotions.
Therapists and counsellors employ diverse methods. Finding one whose approach resonates with you can enhance the therapeutic experience.
An effective therapist or counsellor guides you towards noticeable progress, contributing to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
It’s important to remember that no client is beyond help and no therapist or counsellor is inherently ineffective. Finding the right fit is crucial, and any professional will tell you this. It is entirely acceptable to meet with multiple clinicians to find the right match.
Your mental health journey is worth the effort.
Canadian certified counsellors are trained to use counselling therapy to help people who may be facing problems within different life domains. While counsellors do not provide diagnoses or prescribe medicine, they are trained to address a large variety of mental health and wellness issues. This can include anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, ADHD, work and school problems, self-confidence, and more.
Counselling may involve more short-term talk therapy for current issues faced by the client.
A social worker is a professional who helps people with difficult life situations. A social worker’s role is to help people find ways to solve their problems. Clinical social workers have training in human behaviour and the common problems that people face. Many will work with special groups like teens, refugees, the homeless, etc.
Social workers in Quebec are licensed by l’Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec.
A coach can help individuals who may be going through personal or career-related changes in their lives. More specifically, a coach can help individuals identify different goals, and then help them make a plan to attain these targets. Life coaches can specialize in a variety of issues, such as identifying one’s passions in life, problem-solving, identifying people’s strengths, increasing motivation, and influencing clients’ behaviour, all with the goal of helping people live a happy and fulfilling life.
Art Therapists complete graduate training in art therapy which focuses on the use of visual imagery in a therapeutic framework. In art therapy, clients are able to work on many of the same issues they would work on in with other types of therapy, however, creating visual imagery is part of the therapeutic process. This type of therapy is helpful for people who enjoy expressing themselves creatively or who don’t connect with traditional talk therapies alone.
Clients are not required to have special skills in art to fully benefit from the sessions.
Yoga Therapists complete specialized training in yoga therapy which focuses on the use of yogic practices in a therapeutic framework. In yoga therapy, clients are able to work on many of the same issues they would address with other types of therapy; however, integrating physical postures, breath work, and meditation is part of the therapeutic process. This type of therapy is beneficial for people who enjoy a holistic approach to healing or who find traditional talk therapies alone insufficient.
Clients are not required to have prior experience in yoga to fully benefit from the sessions.
Psychotherapists are mental health professionals that specialise in psychotherapy, which is primarily talk-based. Psychotherapy encompasses a variety of different psychological interventions that aim to change individuals’ behaviours and ways of thinking. These interventions can help people with decision-making, problem solving, answering difficult questions, how to better understand others and the world around them, and more. Not only that, but there are also many different types of psychotherapists, such as marriage, family, addiction, drama, and art therapists.
Psychotherapy may take time, and can be used for more complex disorders that have roots in the past.
Counselling Psychology Candidates undergo graduate training in counselling, which involves direct clinical experience under supervision. In their practicum, students work on many of the same issues they would encounter in professional practice; however, they are guided and mentored by experienced counsellors as part of their learning process. This practicum is beneficial for individuals seeking hands-on experience and practical skills in a real-world setting.
Clients can expect to work with practicum students who are dedicated to developing their counselling expertise.
